You can find hundreds, if not thousands, of 3-reel slots to play online today, no matter where you live. They’re usually basic with few features, giving you a cheaper game to play thanks to fewer paylines.
We’ve created this guide to go through their features, including discussing the differences between these and five-reel slots. We’ll also consider demo play, slot themes, payline availability, and whether or not you can expect to find any bonus rounds there. We’ll also share some of our preferred slots, including Haunted Reels and Magic Fruits Deluxe.

You’ll easily understand the basics here – a three-reel slot has just that, three reels to spin. You’ll most often have one row of symbols landing when the reels stop spinning, but in some cases, there could be more than one row available. You can check this before you play, though.
Given the size of these slots, you’ll often find the paytable on the same screen. It usually sits to the left or right of the set of reels. We’ve found some three-reel slots that put it on another page, though; if this is the case, you’ll typically find a link to it somewhere around the bottom of the page, or wherever the game controls are. We’ve compiled lots more information and guidance for you here if you’re interested in trying some of these games.
The most obvious answer is that they have two fewer reels. Of course, there’s a little more to it than that. We’ve found they’re simpler overall, with fewer features to find in play. We’ve put together a table that describes the features you might see in these games.
| 3-reel slots | 5-reel slots |
| Limited paylines (possibly as few as one); limited ways to win | Multiple paylines, ways to win, or cluster pay formats |
| A few basic symbols | More symbols are involved, with a chance of wilds and scatter symbols |
| Classic fruit themes, bars, and sevens symbols, few other theme variations | Assorted themes; sometimes a mix of themes, i.e., pets and outer space |
| Rare to find free spin rounds or bonus features | Free spin rounds and bonus features are common, sometimes with multiple bonuses per slot |
While these slots seem simple enough, you do still have some features to think about before getting started. We’ve provided four of the main ones here to give you a better sense of what to expect.
Quite a few online casinos offer slots with no deposit, where you can sign up for a free account and be able to access all the demo or practice play versions of these games. We like this approach as it means we can try a few slots to see what we think of them. Once we’ve picked one or two favorites, we can work out how much to play per spin.
We’ve played 3-reel slots with one, three, or five paylines involved – those are the most common options you’ll see in play. However, if you find a slot with a 3 x 3 format, where nine symbols land in view once the reels stop on each spin, you can get 27 ways to win instead. This would involve playing one bet per spin to cover all 27 ways. This means you have 27 possible combinations of symbols that can land in a winning format on each spin.
The latter way to win usually involves a larger bet. However, this is still likely to be quite small compared to some of the betting options you’ll see in five-reel slots. That said, if you play a one-line slot game, you can play from as little as one cent, penny, or whichever currency you are using.
The classic 3-reel slot is, of course, the fruit-filled slot game. Based on the original fruit machine, this version follows that as closely as possible. You might even see a fruit machine casing and buttons provided as part of that design.
However, in recent years, we’ve seen a push to provide players with plenty more variety in this area. Some slots give you the chance to find wilds or multiplier wilds in play. Others have more detailed themes, which have included Thanksgiving, Christmas, and horror themes. We’ve also seen slots based on mining and diamonds, to name just two other examples.
We’ve seen that bonus rounds and free spin features are much less common in three-reel slots. However, some do have them. We’ve noticed that free spins tend to be far less common than a bonus round. Many slots include a scatter symbol to unlock the free spins, and three-reel games simply don’t have the space to land three of those to reach any free spins.
That said, we have played quite a few titles that include a bonus symbol. Quite often, it only needs to land once to reveal access to a bonus round. For example, Turkey Time from Wager Gaming uses a turkey as the bonus symbol. If you play three coins on the payline on each spin, you stand a chance of finding a turkey to go through to the bonus round. Most slots we’ve played with a bonus round offer a simple picking game to determine our prize.
Yes, you can sometimes find a progressive jackpot in a slot with three reels. You’ll usually see the current jackpot total somewhere on the main game screen when you load it to have a look. We’ve seen random triggers to release the jackpot in some games, but others require a specific combination of symbols to release the amount. Typically, a small slice of each bet goes into the jackpot, so the more popular the game is, the more likely it is that the jackpot amount will climb to higher figures.
You’ve got plenty of these games to choose from, regardless of which online casino you’re interested in joining. Before you play some though, note the following points. We always go through these pointers to help us pick the right title to play at any time.
You know whether you’re the sort of player to go for high stakes slots or whether you prefer to play with the smallest amounts possible. We tend to check the range of bets we can use on a specific game to see where the minimum and maximum coin range sits.
We also look at whether we can play more than one coin per line. Many 3-reel slots allow us to play one, two, or three coins per line. You should be able to check this via the paytable. Oftentimes, you’ll see three columns of prizes, depending on how many coins you play. Note that a three-coin bet might open up a chance to access a bonus round, whereas playing with one or two coins won’t do this. In this case, we usually go for the smallest-value coin and play three of them per go to give us that opportunity. In any event, playing with a lower bet per spin gives us more spins overall and a longer gaming session.
We’ve seen many 3-reel slots with basic fruity themes to match the classic fruit machines found in brick-and-mortar locations. However, as we noted above, there are other basic slots that have done well to introduce some different themes. If you find an online casino with plenty of these games to choose from, note how many give you something different. One of those might provide you with some more entertaining gameplay rather than something familiar.
RTP means return-to-player. It’s not the amount you’ll win when you play the game, though. Rather, it’s the amount the game should return to players who play with real funds over the life of the game. We’d always recommend choosing a slot with a high RTP – aim for 96% or above if you can.
Volatility tells you how often the slot might pay out, and what type of prizes you might get if it does. For example, low volatility slot machines should pay out more often, but will usually produce small sums when they do. If you play a high volatility slot, it’s likely to pay out a lot less often, but when it does, it could be a significant prize.
We’ve listed a few of our preferred slots here to show you some of the variety you can find when looking for these slots to play. Be aware that you may not find all slots in all countries; some software providers do have limitations on where you can play their games. Most countries do still have a good mix of titles to try though, including some free slots in Canada and in many other countries around the world.

The witch oversees your progress in this single-line Wager Gaming slot, and turns out to be a wild symbol. Land one in a winning line and you’ll get 2x the standard prize, while two witches in a winning line provide 4x the usual win. You can also play with one, two, or three coins. Playing with three allows you a chance to access the bonus round if you can land a pumpkin in view.

Wazdan created this slot, which is a polished and appealing fruity confection with no special features involved. We like the 3 x 3 format here, offering space for five paylines. You’ll see lots of basic fruit icons, and the lowest-value ones can appear with a joker on them too. Those jokers can produce the best prizes if you get a winning line with jokers involved.

Here’s one of Betsoft’s many Hold & Win slots, this time based on a three-reel, three-row format. The festive theme makes a change from the fruit slots in many ways. For example, there are gingerbread men and candy canes among the symbols, and four fixed jackpots sit above the reels. You also get a snow globe wild symbol, plus Santa appearing on a coin. Three or more coins will unlock the Hold & Win round, offering coin wins and the chance of a jackpot.
With far fewer spaces for symbols to land when you spin the reels, these slot games may seem limiting to play. However, as you’ve seen, that’s not the case. It’s not all about fruit either – you can find a wider range of themes to enjoy today, and even the occasional bonus round. While three-reel games are perfect if you want simplicity, they do bring a more in-depth slot experience to the fore as well. We’ve played slots that have wild symbols or bonuses to try and access, but even in their simplest form, we enjoy these for their compact form and potential.
