  • Too much information and choice for bettors

Getting started with sports betting – a simple guide

Why do you want to bet on sports? It might well be because you want to take your fan experience that bit further, in which case you’ll need the basic information in my guide to sports betting so you can avoid rookie errors and the pitfalls that come along with them. In a nutshell, sports betting involves you predicting the outcome of an event on a sports field, and wagering on that outcome. Of course, there are plenty of ways to do this, and so to start this guide to betting, I’ll take you through the different types of wagers you might find at online betting sites.

Common types of sports bets

This is not every bet you’ll see, but the most common wagers I’ll mention in my guide to sports betting will fall into these categories:

  • Moneyline bets – you might also see these called ‘straight’ or 1X2 bets depending where you are in the world. This is a basic bet on the result of the game.
  • Parlay bets – also known as accumulators in some countries. This is combining multiple bets in one for higher payouts, but also comes with higher risks as all parts of the bet need to win
  • Over/Unders – this one is usually used for scores, and whether it will be over or under a given number. Can also be used for other stats in the game like the number of penalties or yards in football.
  • Point spreads – here you will be wagering on the margin of victory in a game.
  • Prop bets – this term covers a lot of markets, and basically means anything that is not directly connected to the final result, like who the first scorer might be or who will be the first to get a yellow or red card in soccer.
  • Futures – also called overalls, this is a long term bet about who might win a tournament or league like the ICC Cricket World Cup, Super Bowl or the EPL.

Once you know the types of bets, you’ll also need to understand the odds, so the next stage of my guide to betting will give you a brief overview of this.

Odds typeHow they work
FractionalShown as two numbers separated by a ‘/’ The first shows your potential profit, and the second the stake required to win it.
DecimalOdd are shown by a single number >1. This represents the total amount you’ll get for a winning bet, including your stake.
AmericanAre shown as positive or negative odds. Positive odds indicate how much profit you would make on a $100 bet. Negative odds indicate how much you need to bet to win $100 in profit

Do’s and don’ts when you start sports betting

I’m not getting all preachy here, but there are plenty of pitfalls you’ll need to sidestep if you are going to have good betting experience. For that reason the next part of my sport betting guide is based on personal experience, and should help you when you first get started. I’ll start with what I’ve learned can give you a firm foundation and should serve you as well as it’s served me:

  1. Research, research, research – these are the first three things you need to concentrate on. It’s about knowing your sport in general, as well as specifics for the game you are betting on including key players, conditions and anything else specifically related to your chosen sport.
  2. Manage your bank – blowing your whole budget in the first five minutes is a common rookie error, so stick to smaller wagers (2-5%) so losing streaks don’t wipe you out and you can increase as your bank grows.
  3. Look for the best odds  – whatever your wager, you’ll want the best odds, so shop around for what you want. It might not seem much for a single bet, but over the course of a month or season can make a huge difference.
  4. Value bets – as a sort of addition to the tip above, look for odds where you think the sportsbook has undervalued an outcome.
  5. Avoid emotional betting – as a sports fan it’s easy to let personal bias or affections for one team (or their arch rivals) get in the way of an informed wager. This is why #1 is so important.

Pitfalls to avoid when betting on your favorite sports

Another big factor about learning how to bet on sports is avoiding those pitfalls I mentioned earlier in this online betting guide, and to do that you’ll need to know what they are. These can trip you up easily, so make sure you think about what you are doing so you don’t end up:

  • Chasing losses – this is the most common pitfall so I’ll start here. This is when you try and win back money you lost by placing larger riskier bets. This rarely works, and the same goes for chasing a winning streak, when you continue to place bets even when your research tells you not to.
  • Going on a hunch – gut feelings are all well and good but they rarely come off and unless you are doing this purely for fun you will do some damage to your bank.
  • Betting more than usual – upping your stakes outside your budget is always a bad idea, it can lead to an empty account and further problems further along the line.
  • Being overconfident – Don’t fool yourself into thinking you can’t lose, especially if you have just done something reckless and it came off. You may end up betting too much and clearing your account out.
  • Overeaching – don’t start betting on a sport you know nothing about because you’ve had success in one you are expert in. Do your research, each sport has its own defining factors, and you’ll need to know them before you get started.

How to legally bet on sports

Once you are armed with the information in this online betting guide, you’ll want to know how to get started. This is not as simple as it sounds, as sports betting laws will vary depending on where in the world you are. Even from country to country the picture is a little blurred, with the US being an excellent example. Sports betting is legal in 38 states, but online sports betting is only legal in 29 of those. In some states the minimum age is 21, in others 18 or 19. You also have to be physically located within a permitted state to place bets, although you don’t necessarily have to be a resident.

This means the golden rule here is to check the local laws where you are as well as the license and T&Cs of any sportsbook you look at to make sure that neither you or the they are doing something that is not allowed. Also make sure you have age verification documentation on you, as well as government issued ID, as you’ll need this to comply with KYC rules, which you’ll need to do before you can withdraw any winnings from betting site bonuses.

How to bet on sports online – picking the right sportsbook

No guide to sports betting would be complete without a look at sportsbooks, as picking the right one can be crucial to your overall experience. I’ve already looked at the legal aspect of sports betting online, but there is more to finding the right sportsbook for you. This does depend to a certain extent on personal preference, as some will be a better fit than others, but whichever one you choose for your sports betting there are several other factors to consider.

Welcome bonuses

These will be the first thing you see when you land on a sportsbook site, and the welcome offer will be displayed in large print in front of you. They came in different types, and while online betting no deposit bonuses are few and far between, you are more likely to see one of these waiting for you:

Type of bonusHow it works
No sweat betIf your first bet loses up to a given amount, you account is credited with bonus bets to the value of your stakeCommon
Bonus betsYou place a qualifying wager, this releases a predefined number of bonus betsCommon
Deposit matchThe sportsbook will match your first deposit, typically to 100%, sometimes up to 200%Rare

Regardless of which one you opt for, it’s the smaller print you need to pay attention to as much as the large numbers. This will tell you what you need to do before you can withdraw any winnings, and how long you have to do it. The T&Cs will also tell you about any bet restrictions, and before you claim your free bets, you need to be aware that while winnings might be yours to keep, your bonus bet stakes are almost never returned.

Depth of sports and markets

It doesn’t matter how good the bonus is if you can’t place the bet you want, so before signing up anywhere you’ll need to look at the sports and markets available. You can pretty much take it as read that the major three letter leagues like the NFL, NBA and even the IPL and EPL are covered in some depth, but if your passion is hurling or even Nascar, you’ll have to look to see what the coverage is like.

It’s not just the sports but the depths of the markets as well, as chances are you’ll not just want to bet on the outcome of the game. There are other markets you can bet on, For instance, in soccer, you can also typically wager on:

  • Correct Score
  • Total goals
  • First goalscorer
  • If both teams score
  • Number of cards
  • Number of corners/free kicks

Betting tools

Before I finish up my online betting guide, I need to give you a brief look at popular sports betting tools that can help you.

  • Bet builder – this is a tool most sportsbooks have to help you create parlay/accumulator bets, and you can add selections easily and be informed of the total odds and potential winnings every step of the way
  • Cash out button – this allows you to complete a wager early, at the current odds you see at the time. This is ideal if you are risk averse and are already happy with your level of profit, or want to mitigate the size of a loss.

Conclusion – Use my online sports betting guide to get off to the right start

It’s no secret that getting started with sports betting can be difficult, but using this guide to sports betting as a primer, you should have everything you need to get going quickly and safely. You’ll know what to expect from markets, bets and odds, as well as some common mistakes you’ll need to avoid. In this online betting guide I’ve also given you some insights in what to look for in a sportsbook, and how pickling the right one as well as the bonuses they have to offer can give you the perfect start. Of course, you’ll want to do this at your own pace, but when you  are ready you’ll see resources on this site and even on this page that can help you with this next step.
