Are real money online casinos legal in Illinois?
If you’re looking for a
US online casino
site, there are only a small handful of states that actually allow real money gambling. And unfortunately, Illinois is not one of them. While the Illinois Gaming Board oversees gambling, it hasn’t licensed any internet casino (iGaming) operators. That means playing real money casino games online from within Illinois would not only violate state law but could also expose you and your personal information to serious risks by relying on unlicensed, unregulated providers.
What are the alternatives?
Traditional online casinos are banned in Illinois. In contrast, sweepstakes casinos let Illinois residents legally enjoy online casino-style games using virtual currencies instead of cash. At these sites, you never deposit real money into your account, and there’s no real-money wagering. This setup allows them to operate under sweepstakes laws rather than traditional gambling regulations. You’ll find a similar situation if you look for
real money online casinos in Virginia
and in many other states that impose a ban on traditional iGaming.
How do online sweepstakes casinos work in Illinois?
When you visit a sweepstakes casino online in Illinois, you’ll typically find two types of virtual currencies at play: Gold Coins and Sweeps Coins. They’re both used to play sweepstakes games and can be obtained free through a variety of bonuses and promotions.
However, they also share a few subtle differences. For example, Gold Coins can also be purchased directly from the sweepstakes casino, but Sweeps Coins can not. Moreover, Sweeps Coins winnings from games can be used to redeem prizes, including real money. Although these real money prizes rely on you meeting several eligibility requirements, from verification to playthroughs and minimum SC redemption thresholds.

- Identity verification:
You must submit valid documents that show proof of your identity and residential address.
