It’s something that not all gaming fans are keen on, but it plays an important part in managing rosters. So if you’ve been wondering what IR is in fantasy football, my guide is here to help.

In addition to explaining what’s meant by IR Spots, I’ve set out the pros and cons, so you’ll be able to take advantage of this feature in the event of any player injuries that might otherwise have impacted your team unfavourably.

IR in Fantasy Football: Pros and Cons

  • Minimise the impact of player injuries
  • Keep your roster intact
  • Make the most of your team’s potential
  • Free up bench spots
  • IR Spot rules vary

What is the IR spot in fantasy football?

Football is an athletic game that puts a huge amount of strain on the players, making injuries inevitable. It’s bad enough when any member of the team is put out of action for a while, but if they’re one of your major players, you’re instantly placed at a major disadvantage. And even more so if multiple players are given ‘Injured Reserve’, or ‘IR’, status.

Some leagues offer one or more IR Spots, so you don’t have to drop any squad members. You can select a new player to fill the roster, and hopefully limit any repercussions from losing an important member of the team.

What use is the IR position in fantasy football?

Fantasy football is a hobby that you can take as far as you’d like to go. And being able to ride out potential rough patches with squad members out of action is essential if you’re aiming to top the league.

It’s important to note that some leagues don’t offer an IR Spot, whilst others might offer two, three or even four of them. There’s very little consensus on who qualifies for an IR Spot too, as the following table demonstrates, so it’s worth checking out the finer details before committing to any league.
