In June 2025, the New York Attorney General issued cease-and-desist letters to sweepstakes operators, forcing them to stop offering services to state residents. On top of this, new bills (Senate Bill 5935 and Assembly Bill 6745) are advancing through the legislature to formally ban sweepstakes-style casinos and sportsbooks statewide.

This puts New York alongside states like Washington, Idaho, Nevada, Hawaii, and Tennessee, which already prohibited Fliff and similar sweepstakes sportsbooks.

Why Fliff is blocked in New York

Originally, Fliff operated legally under federal sweepstakes law, offering two virtual currencies:

  • Fliff Coins: Fun-only play with no cash value.
  • Sweepstakes Coins (Fliff Cash): Used in sweepstakes contests and redeemable for prizes.

But in June 2025, New York cracked down. Cease-and-desist orders forced sweepstakes operators to suspend all services in the state, and pending legislation is set to cement a permanent ban.
