What are sweepstakes?
Plain and simple, a sweepstake is a promotional event in which a prize is awarded to a winner, randomly picked from participants; in fact, chance is the only determining factor in winning in a sweepstakes. However, don’t miss our article on
how to win in sweepstakes casinos
for a deeper insight on sweepstakes mechanics.
You’ll also be happy to know that basic characteristics of sweepstakes include the free entry to the contests, and the fact that any purchases will not increase favorable odds, which guarantees everyone an equal chance of winning, regardless of whether you are broke or a member of the Kardashian family.
The Most Important Sweepstakes Rule: No Purchase Necessary
The law says that sweepstakes casino players have an equal chance to win whether they pay or not. So, free entrance is a common feature of all legit sweepstakes casinos.
Online Sweepstakes Rules & Regulations
Because the sweepstakes model is prone to possible abuse, this type of contest has become tightly regulated over time, and there are currently specific requirements to be met when drafting rules for a sweepstakes event. But how do you write a sweepstakes rule? What should be taken into consideration?
How to tell if a sweepstakes is legitimate? Fear not, to dispel your doubts we can break down the basics of sweepstakes’ rules as follows:
Where there are eligibility requirements for participation, these must be clearly stated in the sweepstakes rules. Such criteria may include age, place of residence, and other aspects, depending on local regulations and the specific context.
Although in some cases purchases are an available option, every sweepstake contest must offer at least one free, alternative method of entry (AMOE) and disclose it in their sweepstake rules. In fact, legitimate sweepstakes will never force you to make a purchase to participate.
Prizes can vary widely, ranging from a sports car to a fat check to a blender; sweepstake rules must include a detailed description of the nature or value of the prizes and in which form the prize is awarded.
Winner selection and notification:
Even if you are very talented, in a sweepstakes no one cares: winners are chosen purely by chance, and in the sweepstake rules, this should be disclosed clearly. It is also common practice to rely on a third party to choose and notify the winner, and it is especially important to specify “how” the winner is to be notified.
Compliance best practices:
One of the most important aspects in sweepstake rules is transparency; you certainly don’t want angry participants knocking on your door and calling you a scammer. The rules should clearly state the start and end date of the content, whether or not there are special exclusions, the winning odds, and everything might be relevant for participants to understand how the contest works.
How to stay safe when playing sweepstakes casinos
| To do | To avoid |
| Be clear on the fact that no purchase is necessary to participate | Be vague |
| Disclose clearly any participation requirements (age, location, number of participants, etc) | Suggest that specific actions might increase winning chances |
| Check your state’s local regulations, which may include specific sweepstakes requirements | Push participant to make a purchase |
| Be sure to comply with relevant laws when it comes to handling contact information collected during the contest | |
