If you’re in Iowa and planning to play at Stake.us, there’s been a change. Stake.us is no longer accessible in Iowa after the state banned online sweepstakes casinos. The move followed a state law, effective July 1st, 2026, authorizing the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission to serve notices of closure to unlicensed sweepstakes sites serving Iowa players.
In this guide, I’ll explain what changed, what it means for players with existing Gold Coins and Stake Cash in their Stake.us accounts, and which free-to-play social casino options are still open to Iowa players.

States Where Stake.us is Unavailable
Iowa now joins a growing list of states where Stake.us isn’t accessible. Players in Arizona, California, Connecticut and a few more states are now closed to the popular operator, with the updated list shown below. Some of these states have approved laws targeting dual-currency sweepstakes platforms, while others are listed at the operator’s own discretion.
The list has grown steadily since 2025, so always verify the Stake.us terms before registering. Using a VPN service isn’t worth it as it breaks Stake’s T&Cs and can lead to account closure.

States Where Stake.us is Available
Stake.us is open to players 21+ years old in 28 states, including Washington, D.C. In these states, players can play for fun using Gold Coins (GCs), or use Stake Cash for sweepstakes play and swap the SCs for real-world prizes. Players in Florida face a $5,000 daily redemption cap. Since state rules keep shifting, Stake.us’ availability can change with little notice, so always confirm your state on the operator’s updated terms before signing up.

Legal Alternatives for Players in Iowa
Losing access to Stake.us doesn’t mean you’re out of options. Two types of platforms bring casino-style fun and prize excitement:
free-to-play social casinos and Mystery Box sites.
- Free-to-Play Social Casinos. Gaming platforms that use a single currency, such as Gold Coins, are your safest option. Here, you can play online slots, blackjack, and other
casino-style games
purely for fun and entertainment, with no prize redemptions or even real-money cashouts. These social casinos sit outside Iowa’s new enforcement rules, best for spending your leisure time with friends.
- Mystery Box Sites. For players who prefer the thrill of winning something real, mystery box sites are worth checking out. On these sites, you open digital boxes for a chance to collect physical prizes such as gift cards, collectible cards, or even sneakers. Most sites show the odds of winning these prizes upfront. Iowa has no law targeting these
mystery box websites. Still, I recommend revisiting the site’s T&Cs, verifying the age requirement, and always set your spending limits.
Final Thoughts: Stake.us in Iowa
Stake.us is no longer available in Iowa after a new state law gave the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission the authority to close unlicensed sweepstakes casino platforms. If you still have a GC or Stake Cash balance, contact the operator’s customer support for assistance.
The good news is that there are still two solid options for you to enjoy casino-style fun and entertainment. Free-to-play social casinos let you play slots using GCs, with no purchase required. Mystery box websites add a twist by letting you unbox physical prizes. Whichever you choose, always play for fun and within limits, and regularly visit our site for updated details on Iowa’s fast-changing gaming landscape.
